Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum subsp. italicum L.)
Ugnė. This ryegrass variety was developed at the Lithuanian Institute of Agriculture. Variety testing for uniformity, distinctness and stability (DUS) was accomplished in Poland and in year 2009 listed to the Lithuanian National list of Plant varieties.
Variety exhibits the average yield of 11.32 t/ha of dry matter and 1.44 t/ha of seed. The largest dry matter on record for the variety – 16.64 t/ha.
Over a period of several years the Ugnė variety herbage yield in the dry matter was determined to be 10.6 to 14.0 percent protein and 21.4 to 22.7 percent fibre. The Ugnė variety of ryegrass is relatively leafy. In the crop produced for testing the leaves constituted on average 50 percent of the total herbage yield mass of the plant. The winter-hardiness of this variety of ryegrass was assessed on average at 6.9 points (on a 9-point scale). The average height of the Ugnė variety of ryegrass is 79 cm. The plants of this variety practically do not lodge. Their resistance to lodging was assessed at 8.6 points.
The average growing period of the Ugnė variety of ryegrass is 151 days (counting from January 1st until the first harvest). The plants of this variety are very little affected by disease.
